My family has a tradition of making banana bread for our neighbors every year. The neighbors next door always make us cookies, and the neighbors across the street give us homemade wine. On Christmas Eve morning, my family makes a big breakfast and everyone takes “a shot” of the homemade wine to kick off the season.
Then, that night, we all watch “National Lampoon’s Chrismas Vacation” in front of a fire. Everyone sings the song that plays during the opening credits, and someone quotes at least every scene of the movie.

This is hardly unique but it is special and it is the way we do it living in Winston-Salem.
On Christmas Eve we attend the 5pm Love Feast at our neighborhood Moravian Church. You have to be there at 3pm to get a good seat. It is one of the most beautiful Christmas celebrations in the world--with coffee that is sweetened with sugar & cream and a Moravian Love Feast bun. It is a candlelight service with special beeswax candles trimmed in red crepe paper to catch drips. The service leaves one spiritually refreshed and prepared for Christmas. It is a service for the community. On Christmas morning we have sugar cake and coffee or hot chocolate and open our presents. There is peace that come from this simple celebration.
