Soup & Stuff for Seniors is a community drive to help stock the food pantry shelves for the upcoming winter months. Anyone who feels the push to help is welcomed! - Barium Springs Homes for Children
With the help of the surrounding community, Barium Springs Homes for Children plans to provide presents to more than 300 kids this Christmas.
These children are currently enrolled in an array of services that Barium Springs provides throughout the region. Some children receiving gifts are living in group housing on campus or out in the community in foster care homes.

- Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation (AARF)

Agency’s objective: To help homeless animals.
Needed: Volunteers needed throughout the year to help at adoption fairs and events, answer phones, provide transportation, attend to medical emergencies and work at raising money. Volunteers are needed to provide foster care for animals. AARF is holding its second annual “Lights for Loved Animals” fundraiser, sponsored by the Eyecarecenter. Lights can be bought in memory or honor of pets (or people) and the cost is $10 for one light, with discounts available for the purchase of multiple lights. The tree-lighting ceremony will be at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 14 in the parking lot of the Eyecarecenter, 800 S. Stratford Road.

Agency’s objective: A shelter for the homeless, open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Two Emergency Night Shelters for men available 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. year round at 930 and 924 N. Patterson Ave. Also provides basic services in addition to shelter, as well as individual case-management services.
Needed: Cash donations to help pay for winter utilities, such items as socks, ear muffs, first-aid supplies, handkerchiefs, winter wear (hats, gloves, scarves for men and women); toiletries, new or used blankets, bath towels, soap and shampoo. Volunteers throughout the year. The shelter will have its first White Christmas Drive from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 8. There will be a car drop-off in the parking lot adjacent to the center. Collection items include white towels, wash cloths, tube socks, underwear, lip balm, pocket tissues, baby wipes, laundry detergent, shampoo and soap. Donors can participate in a short guided tour of the shelter.

Agency’s objective: A Christian-based ministry for people who need emergency help with rent and rent deposits, food, utilities and deposits, fuel, and medicine.
Needed: Canned juice, nonperishable food items for the food pantry, and money. Shampoo, toothpaste, razors, baby products, washing detergent donations. People who can volunteer during the day, Monday through Friday, are needed throughout the year as interviewers, front-desk help, pharmacy and food-pantry volunteers.
There is also a Gift of the Month program in which the ministry asks for special donation items. The schedule follows: November, toilet tissue; December, potato flakes.

Agency’s objective: Providing physical, medical, emotional and spiritual support to people with a serious illness, and to their families.
Needed: Donations from individuals and community organizations for patients and their families during the holidays. In addition to food and small gifts, many families will need financial support to stay warm. People can make donations to the hospice’s Patient Welfare Fund. Also needed are patient-family volunteers, who run errands or stay with patients so caregivers can get away for a few hours; volunteers at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, who are there on a daily basis, providing a support system for patients and their families, as well as for the hospice staff; Hospice Hands volunteers, who speak to area groups, bake special treats, help with odd jobs, repair work, assist with bingo, help with children’s support programs, coordinate special events and work with annual programs, such as Light Up A Life, the Memorial Tree, Hospice Sabbath and Hospice Hope Run; office volunteers, who help with day-to-day activities, and Camp Carousel volunteers, who assist with an annual weekend camp for children and adults who have experienced the death of a loved one.

- Mental Health Association in Forsyth County

Agency’s objective: Promotes mental health for all people in the community through advocacy, outreach, education and support.
Needed: Money and new, unwrapped gifts for its Operation Santa Claus program, which provides gifts to patients at local psychiatric facilities and at John Umstead State Hospital in Butner. Clothing of all sizes for men and women is desperately needed, especially men’s large and extra large clothing, underwear and socks. All gifts must be new. Also, such toiletry items as toothpaste, deodorant, brushes, combs; socks, toboggans, pencils, pens, key chains, magnets, candy and notepads to fill goody bags that will be given to patients at Christmas parties sponsored by the association. Volunteers are needed to sponsor patients, help wrap gifts and help with parties.

- Motor Sports Club at Forsyth Technical Community College
Needed: Donations of bicycles and tricycles in any condition. Forsyth Tech students will refurbish and repaint the bikes, working Saturdays through Dec. 8. Beginning Dec. 1, the Salvation Army will distribute the bikes to needy children. Drop-off points for bikes include several Forsyth Tech locations. Used or new bikes may be taken to the Allman Center information desk on the main campus, 2100 Silas Creek Parkway; the front office of Woodruff Center, 4905 Lansing Drive; the information desk at the Swisher Center, 1251 Dudley Products Drive, Kernersville. Nonperishable food items such as elbow macaroni, rice, decaffeinated and regular coffee, canned fruits and vegetables. Agency’s objective: Organization raises money and buys toys for underprivileged children referred by the Salvation Army. Ninety-five percent of all money raised is used to buy toys. Agency’s objective: Provides shelter, food and clothing for up to 100 men a night until the men find employment or move on. Includes a 12-step, Christian-based program. Volunteers needed for distributing the Angel Tree donations at the Higgins Center, Route 21 North, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 8. Other donations always needed are: children’s winter coats, newborn baby clothes, men’s jeans (32- and 34-inch waists are especially needed), men’s warm jackets and work boots, blankets, plates and silverware, and pots and pans.
