Be thankful for these holiday travel tips

Some people call it “the Super Bowl of holiday travel.”

It’s the time around Thanksgiving when airports are packed with people trying to go somewhere for turkey and pumpkin pie.

As usual for this time of year, transportation officials are telling everyone that the trip through airport security will be shorter and easier if they prepare beforehand.

“The message we want to get across is pack smart and dress for security,” said Lauren Wolf, a spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration.

Here are some tips for how to make the airport experience easier for everyone:

Arrive early.
“The biggest thing that people can do to ease their holiday travel is give themselves enough time,” said Troy Bell, Richmond International Airport’s spokesman.

Dress smart.
Remove metal items such as coins, keys and jewelry from your clothes and pack them in your carry-on bag. Remember that shoes must be removed and screened by TSA. Blazers, suit coats and bulky sweaters will also have to be removed.

Limit your liquids.
When carrying liquids or gels in carry-on luggage, follow the 3-1-1 rule. Liquids or gels should be in containers no more than 3 ounces, placed in a 1-quart, clear plastic, zip-top bag. Only one bag per passenger is permitted.

Medications, baby formula and food, breast milk and juice are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding 3 ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag.

Do not wrap gifts.
“It’s a lot easier to wrap gifts at your destination,” Wolf said.
